BRIEF HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF THE DISTRICT

           

The present Karimganj district before Independence was one of the Sub divisions of the district of Sylhet in the State of Assam. The district is situated between 92-15’ Longitude &92-35’east & between Latitude 24-15, &25-54’ north. Karimganj is the extreme South Western Dist. of Assam. It is bounded by river Kushiara & Bangladesh in the North,Tripura & Mizoram in the South , Hailakandi  district in the East & Bangladesh,Tripura  in the West. The district along with rest of south Assam is geographically isolated from the main land of Assam with a poor connectivity by road through Meghalaya State. It is also connected through Metre gauge line starting from Lumding.Though the economy of the district is predominantly agricultural & forest based, there has been some development in industries also.

 

One large-scale industry has set up recently in the district namely, BARAK VALLEY CEMENTS LTD. at Jumbasti, Badarpurghat where around 100 persons are locally employed. Diastrict Industries & commerce centre, Karimganj started functioning independently in the month of AUGUST’1986.
