Hailakandi, June 14:
Promising medium pacer Pritam Das has made history by
becoming the first boy from the Barak Valley to be inducted
in the under-19 India team.
Das is all set to make his mark in the team that will tour
South Africa in October.
General secretary of the Silchar District Sports Association
(DSA), Babul Hore, said the news of Das’ selection reached
the district headquarters last night. The news is icing on
the Silchar DSA cake, which is celebrating its golden
jubilee year.
In the last two years, he is the third from Assam to have
been selected for the national under-19 team. The others
were Parvez Aziz and Abu Naschim Ahmed. However, another
medium pacer, Sujoy Tarafdar, was unlucky to have missed out
this time.
Das’s family, friends and neighbours burst firecrackers and
offered prayers in celebration. They are hopeful about Das
making it to the senior national team if he continues in a
similar vein.
Assam Cricket Association (ACA) president Gautam Roy,
secretary Bikash Baruah and Union minister Sontosh Mohan
Dev, among others, congratulated Das on his achievement. Das
thanked all his supporters, including members of ACA.
His journey to the national team is the stuff dreams are
made of. He was expecting a call for the trials but not
inclusion in the touring party. Attending the fitness camp
in Guwahati, Das said he got the news from Hore and that “he
wants to make a space for himself in the first 11”.
His dreams of playing in the Ranji Trophy were realised when
he made his Ranji debut against Orissa last season, claiming
five wickets for 65 runs.
He bagged 42 wickets in the under-age group meets last
season. The Barak Valley Sports Journalists Association has
felicitated him twice on his success. “His performance in
the age-group meets, zonal meets and Ranji Trophy clinched
things in his favour,” one of his colleagues at the fitness
camp said.
Those tracking Das’ career reminisce about Das playing at
tennis tournaments in Silchar. In 2001, he took admission in
the coaching centre of the District Cricket Players’
Association in Silchar under coach Rajiv Das. He got a
chance to play in the Assam under-15 in 2002-03. Later, he
also played in the under-17 and under-19 teams of the state
and in 2005, he played in the under-22 team.
Fourth bridge for Barak
- Dispur push to new project near Silchar with central funds
OUR CORRESPONDENT
Silchar, June 10: Dispur has launched a fresh action plan to
raise the fourth road bridge over the Barak, the state’s
longest river barring the Brahmaputra, near this town.
The bridge, to be constructed at Madhura point in Malugram
locality on the northern fringe of this town, is estimated
to cost Rs 29.87 crore. The Centre will foot the bill.
Official sources today confirmed that the move to build this
around 462 metres long bridge recently gained momentum after
the state public works department (PWD) finalised its
“concept paper” on this proposed road bridge a couple of
months ago.
Assam’s Congress MP in the Rajya Sabha, Karnendu
Bhattacharjee, said he had called on Union minister for
national highways and surface transport T.R. Balu in New
Delhi earlier this week. He confirmed that the minister had
evinced great interest in this project.
The source of the Barak lies in Saramati hills on the
Nagaland-Manipur border. It flows through the Barak Valley
in south Assam for 189 km to Bangladesh.
There are at present two bridges over the river: one
connecting Silchar with Rongpur, a township on the eastern
suburbs of the town, and another at Badarpur, which provides
access to the vast western expanses of Cachar district.
Another bridge over this river is currently under
construction at Lakhipur, a subdivisional headquarters in
the district’s eastern fringe on its boundary with Manipur.
Local PWD sources said the proposed bridge would connect the
town’s northern fringes with National Highway 53. It would
also accelerate the grow-th of a new and modern township at
Dudpatil-Rampur area.
NIT Silchar is now part of a family of twenty institutes
that are set to become institutes of national importance.
5th convocation of NIT, Silchar
concludes
Engineers of ability can translate dreams into reality
From our Correspondent, Sentinel Assam
SILCHAR, June 3: A student cannot become a good engineer
with his ability to draw, calculate or design. He should be
imaginative. He should imagine structures which are to be
built, machines yet to work and activities yet to happen,”
observed Subir Raha, former chairman of the ONGC, while
delivering his speech as chief guest on the occasion of the
5th convocation of the National Institute of Technology
(NIT), Silchar, on Saturday.
Addressing the assembly of distinguished guests, faculty
members and students, he said engineers do dream like other
people. But, he pointed out, they are different from other
dreamers because of their creativity, their desire to
translate dreams into reality. He wished that the graduates
would involve themselves in many areas of creativity in
their professional career which will enable them to taste
the sweetness of success and the bitterness of failure. The
former ONGC chairman explained with allusions the measure of
satisfaction and success in life to the graduating students
of this institution.
Prof Gautam Bora, director, IIT, Guwahati, who is also the
chairman of the Board of Governors, NIT Silchar, presiding
over the august function, said greater responsibility rests
on the faculty members and staff to set and maintain
academic standards and environment. Teaching and research
have to go simultaneously with all sincerity and dedication,
he stressed.
He suggested strengthening of research works with definite
goals in mind. Prof Bora, at the same time, insisted on
projects of inter-disciplinary nature for better results. He
revealed NIT Silchar “is now part of a family of twenty
institutes that are set to become institutes of national
importance”. A relevant Bill in this regard is before the
Parliament for enactment, he said.
Prof PK Banik, director of the Institute, read the report on
the activities of the Institute in the last academic
session. He highlighted infrastructure development and
upgradation of some of the faculties which include
modernization of laboratories, enhancement of scholastic
exercises, post graduate and Ph.D programmes, as well as
library facilities. He touched upon academic works relating
to performance of students in examinations, significant
improvement in campus recruitment and placement, beside
publication of well-researched articles by faculty members
in journals of national and international repute. He called
upon both the teachers and the student to strive together
for academic excellence.
In this convocation, 23 M. Tech and 191 B. Tech students
were awarded degrees.

Ride a nightmare on highway 44
OUR CORRESPONDENT Telegraph India
Hailakandi
June 13: Be prepared to be robbed, bruised and battered if you wish to travel by night buses on National Highway 44.
Dacoities and robberies have become so frequent on such buses that travellers are scared out of their wits.
Just last week, 26 passengers on a Guwahati-Silchar night bus of the Assam State Transport Corporation were robbed of all their belongings. Worse still, some of them were beaten up.
The ASTC bus had set off from Guwahati for Silchar at 6 pm. Of the passengers, six were among the 20 toppers in this year’s matric examination, the results of which were declared recently. They were returning from Guwahati along with their guardians after attending a felicitation programme organised by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
The rank holders on the bus were Anindita Roy, Jabir Hussain, Shnaoli Choudhury, Tonnistha Shome, Sangita Roy and Chakrapani Dutta.
The passengers said the driver and conductor stopped the bus at Jorabat, where the six robbers boarded the vehicle. They pretended to be passengers and told the conductor that they would get down at Ladrymbai in Meghalaya. Two of them entered the driver’s cabin and the other four sat in the rear of the bus.
On reaching Aath Mile around midnight, the gang put on black masks. The two robbers in the cabin stopped the bus at gunpoint, while the others assaulted the passengers.
The dacoits looted the passengers of all their possessions: mobile handsets, jewellery, cash and luggage. They beat up two of the HSLC toppers, Anindita and Jabir, when they tried to resist the robbers. After collecting the loot, they made an easy escape. The passengers reported that the robbers conversed in Bengali.
Last Saturday, an Guwahati-Agartala night bus owned by Sherwali Travels was waylaid in similar fashion on NH 44 and looted.
The passengers filed an FIR at Bajaricherra police station. After the bus reached Silchar in the morning, irate members of the NSUI and Youth Congress met ASTC officials. They demanded that bus drivers should put a halt to the practice of picking up passengers from the wayside.
No bus heading towards the Barak Valley from Guwahati has police escorts. Thugs frequently board the buses pretending to be passengers and rob them on deserted stretches.
Drivers and conductors are allegedly hand-in-glove with these gangs, which is why they stop the buses and pick up “passengers” despite vehement opposition by other travellers. The two recent dacoities seem to bear out such accusations.
Last year, Dispur had appealed to the Meghalaya government to provide security to long-distance night buses.

Steamer service set to roll between Kolkata, Badarpur
From Our Correspondent
BADARPUR, June 10 – Good news for Barak Valley! After train,
bus and flight services, the region is going to have a
steamer service within a very short period. The steamer will
operate from Kolkata-Haldia port via Bangladesh.
Official sources said that the steamer will run between the
months of June and October and the travelling time will be
two weeks. The steamer will transport essential commodities
like rice, cement, paper, tea, bamboos, coal, iron etc. The
final preparations for the regular movement of the steamer
service have already begun.
For this purpose, the construction work of the Badarpur
river terminal, begun in February 2003, on a plot of land
measuring 2.5 bighas has already been completed. The
contractor, Kalipada Chakraborty told this correspondent
that though the construction of the whole project including
two RCC jetties was due to be completed within June 2004 but
due to the devastating floods in the Barak Valley that year,
the project got delayed. However, before the target date,
the construction work of one godown of the steamerghat,
officer’s guest house and a watch tower of the steamer were
duly completed.
Chakraborty also mentioned that for construction of the
river terminal, the North-Eastern Council had sanctioned Rs
8 crore and the work was inaugurated in October 2002.
Inland Water Transport (IWT) department sources said the
pucca godown was constructed after pulling down the earlier
godown built in 1940 at the Badarpur ghat. During the
British rule, there was regular steamer service from
Badarpur to Calcutta and goods like tea leaves, bamboo,
coal, iron, cement, rice were regularly transported. The
steamer service however came to a close in 1965 after
relations between India and the then East Pakistan took a
nosedive. After a gap of nearly 42 years, the service is
again going to restart and will have a definite impart on
the economic development of both the nations, IWT department
sources felt.
Meanwhile, the Cachar district administration, has
inaugurated an AC diesel engine ferry service on the banks
of the Barak river at Fulertal village near Lakshmipur town
of Cachar district. The ferry was inaugurated by the
Minister of Urban Development and Rehabilitation, Dinesh
Prasad Gowala. Anyone can travel to the Barak river on the
ferry, by paying the fare, which however has not yet been
fixed. This 16-metre long boat cost Rs 15 lakh given by the
district administration. There are 60 seats in the luxury
boat services of which though kept reserved for VIPs,
leading citizens and tourists, can be availed by the common
people in the event of the non-availability of the former.

Cachar most corrupt dist: MLA Rumi Nath
By a Staff Reporter Sentinel Assam
GUWAHATI, June 14: In corruption and nepotism, Cachar is in
the forefront among the districts of Asom. This comment
comes from none other than an MLA from Cachar district, the
BJP legislator from Borkhola Assembly Constituency, Rumi
Nath.
According to her the people of the district in general were
being deprived of the benifits of development. Government
funds meant for the people’s welfare were misappropriated as
was evident in the DRDA, Sarba Siksha Abhijan and
implementation of erosion control schemes, said the MLA,
adding that misuse of funds was highest in the Barak valley
in Asom.
“The duty of the Government and the people’s
representatives’ is not over with the allocation of fund
only; they have to ensure the proper utilization of funds
also”, she said. The BJP MLA alleged that the constituencies
being represented by Opposition MLAs were neglected by the
Government.
The Borkhola MLA also expressed concern over the growing
militancy in the Barak valley also. “Violence in the
Brahmaputra valley has infected the Barak valley, which was
once considered to be the island of peace”, she said while
referring to some violent incidents and arrests of militants
that took place in various parts of Barak valley.
Nath was speaking at a press conference here today organized

Deb
lauds record production by Cachar Paper Mill
From Our Correspondent
KARIMGANJ, May 29 – “When the objective is backed by right
zeal and endeavour, strenuous efforts and genuine care, no
hindrance can deter anyone to reach his ultimate goal,” said
Santosh Mohan Deb, Union Heavy Industries and PSE Minister
lauded the remarkable record of performance attained by the
Hindustan Paper Corporation’s Cachar Paper Mill (CPM).
Speaking as the chief guest in the main function of the CPM
foundation day at Panchgram, the Union Minister said, “My
compliments go to the HPC team and CPM in particular for
achieving the unique feat.” I am fully aware how difficult
it is to scale new peaks for a mill being located in an
infrastructurally deficient location as this mill is.”
Showering his heartful compliments on the employees of CPM
for their excellent performance in achieving an all-time
record in production and sales, Deb said, ‘CPM fraternity
and for that matter HPC deserve applause for surpassing
capacity comprehensively not only to reach the targeted
production level but at the same time registering a record
despatch to bring down the stock to bare minimum level. I am
glad that CPM has set the example that no hindrance can come
in the way of achieving excellent performance”.
The CPM foundation day was held at the community centre of
the HPC township of Panchgram which was chaired by HPC’s
chairman-cum-MD, Raj Philip and attended by SS Mani,
director (marketing), Kollol Acharya chief executive, J Bora,
GM (HR & ES), A Mannan, chief executive of Nagaland Pulp and
Paper Co.

in April, 1988. During the year 2006-07 the mill produced

Sutarkandi trade centre yet to become functional
From our Correspondent
KARIMGANJ, May 28: The much-publicised trade centre at
Sutarkandi, 15 km from here, was formally inaugurated on
January 12 this year by Union Minister of State for Commerce
Jairam Ramesh at a function presided over by Gautam Roy,
Asom Excise and Border Area Department Minister. Union Heavy
Industries Minister Santosh Mohan Deb was also present in
the function, which was organized by Assam Industrial
Infrastructure Development Corporation (AIIDC).
But even after four and half months after its “formal
inauguration”, the trade centre is yet to start functioning.
The centre could not open a new era, as expected by the
Union Commerce Minister, in the sphere of economy in the
border region of Karimganj due to a tussle between two
semi-government organizations viz. the Assam State
Warehousing Corporation (ASWC) and the AIIDC.
Debarshi Bhattacharjee, adviser of the Karimganj unit of the
Assam Exporters and Importers Association and ex-vice
president of the North-east Federation on International
Trade and chairman of the Karimganj Municipal Board, when
contacted, told this correspondent that the land for the
trade centre had been purchased by the ASWC, but when the
Ministry of Commerce sanctioned the project, it selected
AIIDC as the modal agent for the task.
According to him, there was an agreement between the two
corporation and as per that, the trade centre complex was to
be handed over to the ASWC after completion of the
construction work.
But whatever may be the case, the fact remains that the Rs
8,00-crore trade centre at Sutarkandi has not yet been made
functional causing resentment among the exporters and
importers. Bhattacharjee said that the intention of setting
up a trade centre at Sutarkandi was to provide facilities to
the exporters and the importers that they could get their
work done under a single roof.
“By this time, an exporter’s office, nationalized bank,
customs office, post office, police check-posts, etc.,
should have been established there,” he added.
