Who’s denying that? It’s a gifted song. I had sung thousands in Assamese but Ya Ali earned me recognition.

Competition is there with new talents coming in. But it will always be survival of the fittest.

I don’t compete with anyone. Shaan, KK are all doing good work. There’s room for everyone.

What made you cut an album in Bengali?

I’m fluent in the language. The eight songs are the translated versions of my popular Assamese hits.

I’m getting good feedback. I’m also looking forward to my next album, Pakeezah.

So, who’s the current craze in the North-East, Prashant Tamang or Zubeen Garg?

I’ve 9,000 songs under my belt. That answers it all.

What about acting?

Acting continues to be my passion. My family is into acting and I’m open to offers.

What about the Hindi film that you are soon to direct?

I’m working on the script of Chakra. It’s a dark film revolving around the elements of love and humanity.

Have you finalised the cast?

Not yet. The script is very important to me. No big stars. I’m targeting the intellectual audience.

Aren’t you acting in your own flick?

Yes, I’ll be playing the younger brother.

Who’s your favourite actor?

I love Kamal Haasan, Naseeruddin Shah and Marlon Brando. But Charlie Chaplin is my favourite.

What about adulation?

It feels nice to be appreciated by the fairer sex.

Doesn’t this make your wife insecure?

Garima doesn’t treat me like a star. She looks after all my work and is a very understanding person. Love has made her secure.
