Nov. 6: Hailakandi is fishing in deep waters
for a solution to the problem of unemployment.
The district fisheries department is conducting an
awareness campaign in villages to encourage people to
join the fisheries sector.
“Fisheries have great scope and unemployed youths
should join this sector as there are a number of
profitable schemes now,” fisheries development officer
Gopal Chandra Bhowmick said.
He said fish production received a boost after the
introduction of a slew of projects under the Assam
Agricultural Competitiveness Project, and local
unemployed youths were already coming forward for
scientific fish culture. Women, too, have expressed
interest in the projects, he said.
The department has estimated that about 5,000 ponds
and fisheries, covering an area of 6,000 hectares,
were affected by floods this monsoon. The losses are
estimated to be about Rs 1.5 crore.
Bhowmick said the administration was informed about
the damage so that fish farmers could be compensated,
but no relief had come as yet.
“We were distraught when floodwaters submerged ponds
and fisheries. But surprisingly, production has
increased remarkably,” Bhowmick said.
The Hailakandi fish market is now flooded with local
varieties and rates have been slashed, much to the
delight of buyers. The annual target for fish
production in the district for 2007-’08 has been fixed
at 8,312 metric tonnes and farmers are hoping to reach
the magic figure.
Bhowmick said that if the upswing continues, fewer and
fewer quantities of fish will have to be imported, and
local people can relish the taste of “homegrown”
varieties.
The state produces about 2 lakh metric tonnes of fish,
against an annual requirement of 3 lakh metric tonnes.
The deficit is met by importing fish from outside the
state, particularly
Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
