Assam: The Transport Computerization Project
was flagged off in Silchar, the administrative headquarters
of Cachar, on recently by B Basumatary. Transport
Commissioner, Asom. The Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Gautam
Ganguly and the State Informatics Officer, NIC Asom, Deepak
Goswami were also present on the occasion along with other
senior State Government officials, a press release stated.
The Transport Computerization Project is poised for early
implementation in all the 27 districts of the State. The two
software applications Vahan and Sarathi, developed by NIC,
encompass almost all core procedures and processes involved
in the transport sector.
During the inaugural ceremony, a driving license processed
for the Deputy Commissioner through the computerized system
was handed over to him by the Commissioner Transport. The
commissioner Transport also ceremonially handed over the
first computer-processed registration certificate to a
resident of Silchar. Immediately after the inaugural
ceremony, the District Transport Office, started issuing
learner’s licenses, driving licenses and registration cards
through the computerized system to its users.
Speaking on the occasion, the Transport Commissioner stated
that computerization for the Cachar DTO was a result of the
joint efforts of the National Informatics Centre, the DTO
Cachar and the Cachar district administration. He lauded the
enthusiasm and efforts of the District Transport Officer B
Charkavorty, who made it possible for Cachar to be the first
district to accomplish implementation of both Vahan and
Sarathi. He acknowledged the active support extended by
Cachar Deputy Commissioner and urged the DTO staff to
utilize the available ICT tools to make their work more
effective and efficient. He expressed his gratefulness to Dr
Mahesh Chandra, Deputy Director General, NIC and his team at
NIC headquarters for the constant support, both technical
and logistic, that has been provided at every stage of
project implementation. The Deputy Commissioner assured all
support from his office to make the project a success. He
commented on the possibilities of utilizing the computerized
system to prevent fraud and other traffic offences. The
State Informatics Officer, NIC briefed the gathering on
various features of the computerized system and the
advantages that would accrue therefrom. He also spoke of the
future scope and potential of the computerized system. He
thanked the Transport Commissioner for his guidance and keen
involvement and the DTO, Cachar for the initiative in the
computerization project, the release added.
