For the common man the role of an architect can be defined as one who creates architecture. Their responsibilities include all the activities that lead to the creation of the architecture. These activities could be in terms of their architectural vision and its articulation.

In India students join an architecture course after the 12 standard or the senior secondary exam. You need high percentage in the sciences and mathematics plus some graphic ability to qualify for an architecture course. There are several architecture institutes in India, most technical colleges or the IITs run a course in architecture. An entrance exam is also held for students aspiring to a career in architecture. The bachelor of architecture course runs for 5 years and students have to go through an eligibility test. Students have to appear for the NATA eligibility test, which is the national architectural ability test to qualify for a B.Arch course.

The NATA eligibility test typically measures the student’s aptitude in the field of architecture. His drawing ability and observation skills are measured plus sense of proportion, aesthetic sense and ability to think creatively.

Students can also go for post graduate study in architecture after they have completed graduation in architecture.

In terms of career growth students of architecture have a vast prospect. They can be employed in the public as well as the private sector. An individual who use qualified as an architect can take up employment with government organizations like PWD or CPWD, state housing development programs as well as city development centers. They can also seek employment with industrial organizations, private contractors or builders and architectural firms. For architects there are employment opportunities abroad too.

After a few years of experience architects can set up a private practice and if they have good clients it can prove to be quite lucrative.

A student who has completed a course in architecture can start on a salary of Rs 15000 to 20000 per month. After some experience the sky is the limit for an architect especially if he is running a private practice.
