WORLD CUP FINAL MATCH

West Indies beat Australia by 17 runs thanks to a classic innings of 102 from Clive Lloyd - his first 50 came off 50 balls, his second from 32 – and some spectacular fielding from Alvin Kallicharran and the young Viv Richards.

Lloyd was dropped on 26 when he attempted a pull through mid-wicket and if the catch had been held by Ross Edwards, the first World Cup could well have headed off in another direction. But the ball went down, West Indies resumed on 83 for three and Lloyd made the error pay with a frenzied attack on the Australian bowlers.

They finished with 291 for eight, having taken 82 off the last 13 overs. But when Australia fought back in the first 20 overs by scoring at four an over, the match was well poised for a cliffhanger finale.

But then things started to go badly wrong as calling between the wickets faltered and Richards began to eye up the stumps as if they were 10 feet high and as many wide. When Ian Chappell ran out his brother Greg, it was one of five disastrous mix-ups, most of them engineered by the rapier like Richards who fired three times and claimed three hits.

Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson pulled things back in favour of the Australians by blasting 41 in six overs, in a display that saw a packed Lord’s crowd go crazy in the late evening twilight amid a cacophany of wild roars, horns, and a rhythm section of beer cans.

But with 18 runs required from nine balls, Thomson swung at ball, missed it and was run out bringing the entertainment to an end.

The huge crowd rushed onto the pitch causing chaos, and in the commotion Thomson had his guards ripped off his legs and umpire Dickie Bird had his treasured cap taken from his head.

Lloyd was named man of the match for his superb innings and organisers started hatching plans for the second World Cup.
