Sikkim University
Currently, Dr. Mahendra P Lama is holding the post of Vice chancellor of Sikkim
University. He has been appointed on the suggestion of expert board from
Ministry of Human Resource Development. Dr. Mahendra P Lama a professor of JNU,
New Delhi and resident of Darjeeling. He is the youngest Vice chancellor of the
country and the economic advisor of Chief Minister of Sikkim.
Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University holds the position for a term of five years
from the date he enter his office. The Vice chancellor of Sikkim University is
the Principal executive and academic officer who shall exercise general
regulation and control over the affairs and give result to the decisions taken
by the panels of the university.
Under the Sikkim University Act 2006, Sikkim University is established with
objects to distribute latest knowledge by offering research and instructional
facilities in branches of learning as it may believe vigorous. The act also
emphasis on making provisions for integrated courses in natural, physical
sciences, forestry, humanities and other associated disciplines in the
educational programme. The Sikkim University act also focuses to train work
force and educate people for the betterment of Sikkim, to take latest techniques
in teaching and learning process, research and studies, to pay huge attention
for the improvement of the social and economic condition of the people living in
the state.
Before the establishment of Sikkim University, entire colleges of the state were
affiliated to North Bengal university of West Bengal. The North Bengal
University designed all the courses and syllabus, due to which it did not meet
the specific requirement of the state. Due to lack of opportunity offered by the
state, majority of the students do not posses higher degrees. Therefore, with
the steady actions of chief Minister of Sikkim, The Sikkim University Bill 2006
has been able to be Act.
