Visva-Bharati University Courses

Visva Bharati University is the Central University of teaching and research in India, positioned in twin towns of Sriniketan and Santiniketan in West Bengal. Rabindranath Tagore who named it Visva Bharati, meaning the communion of world and India, established it. In its early years, Tagore uttered his dissatisfaction with word 'university', as university translates into Vishva-Vidyalaya, smaller in the extent than the Visva Bharati. Until the independence, it was merely a college. After the independence in the year 1951, this institution was given status of the university, and renamed as Visva Bharati University.

Visva-Bharati is established in the rural setting in Birbhum district, around 160 km through road from city of Kolkata. Nearest railway-station is Santiniketan (Bolpur) on Eastern Railway as well as air terminal is the Kolkata Airport. The University campus in Santiniketan, around 3 km from railway station may be reached in just over two hours by train from Kolkata. It is around 146 km by train.

The high officials in the university consist of the Acharya (Chancellor), Paridarshaka (Visitor), and Upacharya (Vice Chancellor). The Paridarshaka of the university is President of India, whereas the Acharya is Prime Minister of India. The University is managed by the Karma Samity (known as Executive Council) that is chaired by Acharya. The departments and institutes are situated in both Sriniketan and Santiniketan. The university is separated into the centres, institutes, schools, and departments. The individual departments are incorporated in the institutes. DST (Department of Science and Technology) gives university’s different programmes dealing with the rich cultural heritage, dance and art education for Government of India. The university is also having two guesthouses: Purba Palli and Ratan Palli, which is named after well-known early industrialist of Tata family, named Sir Ratan Tata.
