Rajiv Gandhi University (in the past known as the Arunachal University), is a premier institution for the higher education for Arunachal Pradesh and has accomplished 25 years of its continuation. Late Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister at that time, had put the foundation stone of this university on 4 February 1984 in Rono Hills, where current campus is situated.
Ever since the beginning, the university is trying to attain excellence and accomplish the objectives as imagined in University Act. The University has academic recognition under the section 2(f) from UGC (University Grants Commission) on 28 March 1985 as well as it started functioning from the 1 April 1985. It has the financial recognition under the section 12-B of UGC on the 25 March 1994. Since then the Rajiv Gandhi University has engraved a position for itself in educational scenario of India following its collection as the University with the potential for excellence through a high-level professional committee of the UGC (University Grants Commission) from amongst the universities in India.
This University was transformed into the Central University having effect from the 9 April 2007 according to the notification of the Ministry of Human-Resource & Development, from Government of India. The University is situated atop Rono Hills with the striking tableland of the 302 acres ignoring river Dikrong. It is about 6.5-km away from National Highway 52-A as well as around 25-km away from the Itanagar, which is the State capital. The campus is associated with National Highway by the Dikrong Bridge.

The teaching as well as research programs of this University is specially designed with the view of playing the positive role in cultural as well as socio-economic development of State. The University provides Under Graduate and Post-Graduate programs with programs like Ph.D. and M. Phil as well. The Department of the Education also provides B.Ed. program.
