Ever since its establishment in the year 1985, the IGNOU (India Gandhi National Open University) has put in considerably for expansion of higher education within the country via ODL (Open and Distance Learning) mode. Presently, the University is offering 338 study programmes through more than 3,500 courses of increasing student strength for more than 30 lakh students. IGNOU provides different courses at following levels: under-graduate as well as post-graduate diplomas, certificates programs, bachelor’s degree programmes, doctorate, and master’s degree programs.

The education is spread in conservative and up-and-coming inter-disciplinary areas like disaster management, consumer protection, human rights, environment, women empowerment, child development, tourism, participatory forest management, teacher education, participatory planning, relocation and rehabilitation, continuing medical-health education, food and nutrition, laboratory techniques, HIV/AIDs, and online learning.

Amongst the biggest contributions of this University is making accessible to the long-distance beginners, with the courses that were previously limited to the personally classroom transactions. These consist of programmes in natural and physical sciences, health, nursing, computers, engineering and technology, B. Ed degree, and information & library sciences amongst others.

The University has developed the academic programmes via its 21 Schools of the Study.
