Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University is huddled in lap of the Himalayan ranges. Srinagar Garhwal is located in the Pauri District of the Garhwal region in Uttaranchal State on banks of the river Alaknanda within mid-Himalaya. It continued to be the capital of the Garhwal kingdom until 1805 AD; after that the centre of the Gorkha rules until 1850 AD as well as the administrative centre of the British until 1890 AD.

Setting up of the Garhwal University was started on Dec 1 1973 and it was execution of the long esteemed dream for local people .This University was recognized under provisions of the Uttar Pardesh State Universities Act No. 10 1973) on Dec 1 1973. The name of this university was rechristened as the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, on 1989 for commemoration of memory of the leading diplomat of country. It consequently established as Central University under the provision of Central Universities Ordinance 2009 No.3 in gazette of India.

The University is amongst ten largest Universities in the country having three campuses and over 180 affiliated institutes and colleges and it is examining just about 150000 students yearly, offering higher education services to seven of 13 Districts in State of Uttarakhand. The University is sanctified with state of the art research facilities, best teachers and academic relations with numerous leading institutions. It has its Headquarters in Srinagar at around 108 km from the Rishikesh on Delhi-Niti National Highway. It is near Birla Campus in Srinagar. The BGR Campus is set on tempting the mountain slopes in Pauri, which is around 29 km from Srinagar, around 100 km from the Kotdwar, which is the nearby railway station. The University provides different academic programs and higher learning courses via 10 Faculties.
