India
India’s higher education is the most developed and the third
largest in the world. Education in India is seen as a stepping
stone to a bright career and one of the ways to upward social
mobility. There has been considerable improvement in this
respect and has globally acclaimed importance.
The Indian Institute of Technology and Management rank among the
best higher educational institutes of the world. The Jawaharlal
Nehru University and the Indian Institutes of management, Birla
institute of Technology and Science (Pilani), the Indian School
of Business (Hyderabad) and All India Institutes of Medical
Science have been recognized among the best institutes in the
world. As a result, students from different parts of the world
are coming to grab these opportunities in India. A special
feature of Indian higher Education system is distance learning
institutes and Open University.
The University Grants Commission, Govt. of India is the main
governing body responsible for coordinating, determination and
maintenance of the standards of higher educational scenario in
India. Apart from this, Distance Education Council, the All
India Council for Technical Education, Medical Council of India
and National Council for Teacher Education etc are responsible
for monitoring, providing grants, recognizing courses and
promoting professional institutes to various undergraduate
programmes. The higher education in India is monitored and
indirectly controlled by the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Govt. of India.
Presently India has a large number of government recognized
Universities, out of which some are central universities, Open
Universities, deemed universities and the rest of them are state
universities. Other than these a large number of private
institutes also offers various professional courses.
The IIT-JEE, CAT, CPMT and AIEEE are all-India common admission
tests required for admission to all professional education
colleges in India. A small percentage of seats are reserved for
foreign students in most of the institutions.
