The Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), was established in the year 1856 and it is located in Shibpur, Howrah. The University is said to be one of oldest engineering universities in our country. The Bengal Engineering and Science university, as it name says offers various academic courses and educational programs for Under graduate and post graduate degrees in applied sciences, engineering and technology. The university also offers Masters and Ph.D in applied sciences and engineering.

The Bengal Engineering and Science University holds 10th rank among all engineering and technology colleges in India, this list was short listed in 2005 by the "India Today" magazine. The university is exactly located on the bank of Hoogli River, Howrah.

With more than 2500 students, the Bengal Engineering and Sciences University covers about 22,000 sq. meters. Being one of the best residential Universities in India, the University houses about 13 hostels in which one is for girls. This University provides a separate accommodation service for international students and also provides quarters and separate hostels for faculty members and other non-faculty staffs.

The main building of Bengal Science and Engineering University holds four- storied academic building with a beautiful central passageway. Most of the academic departments and teaching centres, the central library of University, administrative office of the Dean and the Vice-Chancellor's Office, Faculty and the Examination Office are housed in the same building. The Central Library of the University holds hi-tech facilities like Internet, digital archiving system for all subject books.

The Bengal Science and Engineering University also has much international collaboration with many Universities such as University of Windsor in Canada, Queen's University, Northern Ireland, and the Pennsylvania University, USA. Apart from all regular Arts, Science and Engineering departments, the University also offers many seminars, special courses, certified courses, internship, exhibitions and more importantly job oriented courses to help their students in all possible way to get a well settled and high ranking jobs.
